140 Iranians who were detained during the protests, that began after the announcement of presidential election results, were released. That was reported referring to a statement, from local authorities.
The representative of the Committee for State Security and International Policy Kazem Jalali stated, that the allotted people committed soft crimes. Among the released was not significant political and public figures. The Committee should investigate the mass detention in Tehran: it is mandated to review all cases of Iranians, that held in custody after the presidential elections on 12 June.
Yet about 200 people remain in detention. 150 of them are suspected of possession of weapons and explosive devices, as well as damaging public property during the riots. Another 50 suspected of involvement in riots and anti-factions. Their case will be considered separately.
Supporters of Mir-Hossein Mousavi, the opposition candidate, who, according to official data, lost the election claiming, that the Iranian prison have more members of protest, as indicated by the authorities.
All the Iranians, whom it was decided to release were held in Evin prison, it has been inspected by the inspection committee. Another prison Kahrizak, was ordered to close, after Iran’s supreme ruler Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said, that it is not respected the rights of prisoners. What became of the former prisoners of Kahrizak, it is not yet clear.
As a result of riots, that began in Tehran, after the winner of presidential elections which won current head of state Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, according to authorities, have died about 20 people, but supporters of Mousavi said, that the data is strongly underestimated. On tuesday, July 28, the Government of Iran has banned opposition to hold an event in memory of the deceased.
