china policeNumber of victims in the riots at the Chinese city Urumchi (the administrative center of Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region), according to official data, has increased by 1 thousand 680 people. This was reported today, by the Chinese of “Xinhua”, referring to the administration of the autonomous region.

The figures given by Chinese authorities, refers to “revolt in Urumchi 5 July”, said the agency. We know, that in the next few days in Urumchi also were riots and clashes between protesters and police forces.

Xinjiang authorities have previously reported, that the riots killed 184 people, with 137 of them – Hantsy (that is actually Chinese), and 46 – Muslim Uighurs. Uyghur activists abroad say, that the data on deaths and injuries among the Uighurs is underestimated.

Currently Urumchi is under the control of government security forces. The streets are patrolled by armed detachments of the police.

Today in Tokyo, about a thousand demonstrators called on China to stop inter-ethnic violence in the Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region. Protest march was organized by activists of the Association of Japan and the Uighurs ended without incident.

A day before Turkish Prime Minister – Recep Tayyip Erdogan has compared the ethnic clashes in Urumchi, as genocide and called on Chinese authorities “did not remain it indifferent” to the violence against the Uighurs, Turkish people of the north-western China.
