Richard HollbrookU.S. authorities announced about change in methods of fighting drugs, in Afghanistan. A statement about this at the ongoing summit in Italy of the foreign ministers of Group of Eight “(G8) said the Special Representative of the United States in Afghanistan, Richard Holbrooke.

According to him, the current U.S. program to combat the Afghan drug trade, which focuses on the destruction of poppy fields is a “pointless waste of money”. The program, explained this point of view, Robert Holbrook, it may be destroyed and a certain number acres of poppy, but eventually it only plays into the hands of the “Taliban”, as well as on the one hand, does not reduce the revenues the “Taliban” from the drug trade, but on the other – leads to the reinforcement of militant Afghan peasants, dissatisfied with the destruction of their crops.

The new United States program would have to replace poppy cultivation as a crop and creating a situation where the Afghan farmers will be more profitable to grow other plants.
