Technologies of formation of three-dimensional holograms are expected from grands of electronic industry and research groups, and private users who want more realism in video games, because improvements in the physics of silicon chips and graphics cards can not make a revolution.
However, all hitherto existing technologies for holograms and 3D-images have a common drawback, inherent to any other video: the picture can not be touched and you cant feel its shape and structure. Therefore the interaction with the object directly, without the specialized devices, that simulate the feedback, is another challenge on the way to creating devices with supernatural visualization.
And it took researchers from the University of Tokyo, which are held in New Orleans event SIGGRAPH 2009 and demonstrated device “Air Ultrasound tactile display”, developed under the project “Tangible Holography”.
Creation of the hologram using a concave mirror, separated by 30 cm from the LCD screen to create images with a three-dimensional holographic effect. Tactile perception of the visible image is achieved in two ways. First, on the display is located Wiimote controller to track the movements of hands and a corresponding movement of visualized object. Secondly, the developers created the ultrasonic generator, composed of 324 transducers with individually controlled parameters – the phase delay and amplitude. It forms the displacement of a point of focus 20-mm air pressure with a value of 1.6 gram-force affecting the arm. Thus, a combination of two methods, given the reality of the effect of touching the object. Result – holographic projection of tactile feedback, in which the image itself is not destroyed.
