Student from the U.S. will pay 675 thousand USD for copyright infringement

CopyrightA student from Boston University – Joel Tenenbaum, by a court was ordered to pay to the four record label compensation, in the amount of 675 thousand USD, for the spread of the Internet copyrighted music. The court ruled, that each of the 30 songs that J.Tenenbaum downloaded and overlaid on the network, would cost him to 22,5 thousand USD.

This is only the second case in the American jurisprudence, of copyright infringement on the Internet.

The prisoner admitted, that he is pleased to verdict, because of a relatively small penalty. On a similar trial in Minnesota, a woman who distributed 24 music files online, was sentenced to pay 1.92 million USD – its about 80 thousand dollars per track.

J.Tenenbaum’s counsel stated, that he considered the verdict as unfair and will seek for a review. At the trial, defense counsel said about his ward: “It is just a child who does the same as other children, loves technologies and loves music.”
