Many people in Britain are not able to correctly identify the location of the internal organs of human body. As scientists discovered in the London King’s College, with a similar study conducted 40 years ago, knowledge about the basics of anatomy at the Brits are not improved.
Less than half of the 700 subjects were able to correctly answer the question about where is theirs heart. Only about a third of those surveyed are aware of the location of lungs, about the same number were able to correctly identify where the kidneys. Only 46% of respondents, according to the scientists can say with certainty where the liver.
More than 85% of respondents gave the correct answer regarding the location of the bowel.
The study found that even those who suffer from diseases and disorders of the body, often remain completely unaware as to where exactly it is located. The best result is shown suffering from liver disorders: about 75% of them know where it is.
According to scientists, anatomical ignorance thrives equally among British men and women, with only one difference, that women are more confident in the location of target organs, when they showed the picture of female body.
Lack of basic literacy in the anatomy, according to researchers, not the best way to affect the quality of medical care and effective communication between doctor and patient.
