UN Special rapporteur on extrajudicial executions, Philip Alston, made a podium against the killings of witches and warlock, UN News Center reports.
In his speech, P. Alston pointed out, that in many countries around the world remains a belief in the power of witches. There are many reports, that the women were killed without trial simply on suspicion of witchcraft.
In a report to the UN Human Rights Committee noted, that there is evidence, that many confirmed cases of murder “sorcerer” in the Central African Republic, Papua New Guinea, Tanzania and other countries. In one of the documents on which the author states, that in Tanzania killed annually to thousands of “witches”.
“This may seem very esoteric issue – highlighted P. Alston – but in the course of my work, I found that this widespread phenomenon. I believe that this issue has not been given due attention.” F. Alston called upon the council to acknowledge the existence of this problem and require – UN member states that all such crimes will be treated as murder and investigated properly.
