Stocks of food in the world will reduce over the next 10 years

oecd_engStocks of world food market in the next ten years will decline. This point of view during the I World Grain forum in St. Petersburg was head of marketing and agri-food trade in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Wayne Jones.

“The reserves of the market will decline. In terms of supply and demand are unlikely to be major changes”, – he said.

In doing so, the representative of the OECD noted, that in the coming decades should not expect major changes in the market of food in general. “With respect to the earth – we have 1.4 billion hectares used for agriculture”, – said W. Jones. He said that most of the land is located in Africa, but currently there are difficulties to invest in African agribusiness.

In addition, according to OECD projections, future climate changing of the would entail a decrease in production, resulting in market volatility will remain high. “Markets should be open. Only thus can we understand what we do,” – concluded the expert.

Further, during the forum was made a statement by Agriculture Minister Elena Skrynnik, which reported, that Russia is planning over the next 10-15 years to bring the volume of exports of grain up to 40-50 million tonnes annually, which would increase the share of Russia in the world grain market to 20%.

She recalled that in recent years there has been a decline in the share for the global market of traditional grain-exporting countries. Thus, the United States share of world trade in wheat was reduced from 28% in 2000. Up to 20% in 2009, Canada – from 17% to 14%, Australia – from 16% to 13%, and the only countries in the European Union managed to maintain their share at 15%. The Minister noted, that one of the reasons for this phenomenon has become an aggressive policy of Kazakhstan, Russia and Ukraine.

Recall of the Russian Federation in 2008 grain harvest was 108 million tons, now Russia is one of the three largest exporters of barley and wheat in the world. In this segment of its share reached 14%. In the current year (2008-2009 grain year – from July to July) Russia plans to supply the world market for more than 20 million tons of grain.
